How Poor Ergonomics Can Complicate Your Injury Recovery
You are doing everything right. You are seeing your chiropractor regularly, following your treatment plan, and making progress after your car accident. Then you sit down at your desk for eight hours and undo half of it.
This is a scenario we see constantly at Woolston Wellness Center, and it is one of the most overlooked obstacles to full recovery after an auto accident injury.
Your Workstation Is Working Against Your Recovery
When you have sustained a cervical or lumbar injury in a crash, your spine is in a state of active healing. Damaged ligaments, irritated discs, and strained muscles need consistent support to repair properly. A poorly set up workstation introduces exactly the kind of sustained, low-grade stress that disrupts that process.
Forward head posture from a monitor that is too low adds 10 to 12 pounds of effective load on your cervical spine for every inch your head drifts forward. Slouching in a chair without lumbar support compresses healing discs and strains recovering ligaments. Reaching for a mouse or keyboard that is positioned incorrectly creates repetitive strain on shoulders and wrists that are already vulnerable from the impact.
What We Recommend for Patients in Active Recovery
Monitor height should place the top of your screen at or slightly below eye level so your head remains in a neutral position. Your chair should support the natural curve of your lower back — a small lumbar roll can make a significant difference if your chair does not have built-in support. Your forearms should rest parallel to the floor with your shoulders relaxed, not elevated. And your feet should be flat on the floor with your thighs parallel to the ground.
For patients who work primarily on laptops, we strongly recommend an external keyboard and monitor or a laptop stand. The compact design of a laptop forces a choice between straining your neck to look down or straining your arms to reach up — neither of which supports healing.

We often see patients plateau in their recovery, and when we ask about their work setup, the answer becomes clear. Adjusting your ergonomics is not a substitute for treatment, but it is a critical complement to it. The eight hours you spend at your desk should support your recovery, not undermine it.
If you are in active treatment at our office and feel like your progress has stalled, talk to us about your daily posture habits. Small adjustments to your workspace can make a measurable difference in your healing timeline.
