Questions to Ask Your Chiropractor After an Auto Accident
If you have never seen a chiropractor before — especially after a car accident — it is natural to have questions. Knowing what to ask can help you find a provider who will protect both your health and your case.
Here are the questions we recommend every auto accident patient ask before starting treatment.
Will you document my injuries specifically for my accident claim?
This is the most important question. A chiropractor who treats your pain without creating proper medical-legal documentation is leaving your case unprotected. Ask specifically whether they use trauma-specific diagnosis codes (ICD-10 S-codes), produce narrative reports, and document causation linking your injuries to the crash.
Do you work on a lien basis?
After a car accident, you should not have to choose between paying for treatment and paying your bills. lien-based care means your treatment costs are covered from your eventual settlement, so there is no out-of-pocket expense while your case is open. If a chiropractor does not offer this, they may not be experienced with personal injury cases.
What diagnostic imaging will you order?
At minimum, your chiropractor should order X-rays after an accident. Depending on findings, they may recommend MRI, CT referral, or specialized assessments like computerized spinal ligament analysis. If your provider suggests starting treatment without any imaging, ask why. Undocumented injuries cannot support a claim.
How will you connect my injuries to the accident?
Establishing causation is critical. Your chiropractor should be able to explain how they will link your clinical findings to the specific mechanism of injury from your crash. This includes correlating the type of collision (rear-end, side-impact, etc.) with the specific spinal levels and injury patterns they identify.
Will you coordinate with my attorney?
Strong PI outcomes require communication between your treatment team and your legal team. Ask whether the chiropractor provides regular case updates, responds to records requests in a timely manner, and is available for deposition if needed.
