Why the ER Missed Your Injuries (And What to Do Next)
You went to the emergency room after your accident. They took X-rays, maybe a CT scan. The doctor said nothing was broken. You were sent home with a prescription for ibuprofen and instructions to follow up with your primary care doctor.
Now it has been three days, a week, maybe two weeks — and you are in more pain than you were at the scene of the crash.
This is not unusual. It is actually the most common scenario we see at Woolston Wellness Center.
What the ER Is Designed to Find
Emergency departments are built for triage. Their job is to identify and stabilize life-threatening injuries: fractures, internal bleeding, traumatic brain injury, and spinal cord compromise. They do this well.
What the ER Is Not Designed to Find
Soft tissue injuries are the blind spot of emergency medicine. Whiplash — which involves damage to the ligaments, muscles, and discs of the cervical spine — does not appear on standard X-rays. Ligament tears are invisible on CT scans. Early-stage disc herniations may not be detectable for days or weeks as inflammation builds.
The ER is not equipped to detect these injuries because detection requires specialized assessment tools: flexion and extension films, computerized spinal ligament analysis, and focused orthopedic and neurological testing.
Why This Matters for Your Case
The insurance company will point to your ER records and say you were cleared. No fractures, no significant findings, discharged in stable condition. They will use this as evidence that your injuries are not serious.
But the ER record is not a comprehensive injury assessment. It is a triage document. The injuries that cause chronic pain and long-term treatment needs are the ones the ER was never looking for.

What You Should Do Next
If the ER cleared you but you are experiencing neck stiffness, back pain, headaches, numbness or tingling, dizziness, or difficulty concentrating, schedule an evaluation with a chiropractor who specializes in auto accident injuries. The sooner you are evaluated, the sooner your injuries are documented.
At Woolston Wellness Center, we see these patients every week. We know what the ER misses because we are specifically trained to find it.
Ready to get evaluated? Call (480) 556-6797 or book online for a same-day appointment. No out-of-pocket cost for injury patients.
