What Happens When You See the Wrong Doctor After a Car Accident
Most people do the same thing after a car accident: they go to the emergency room, get cleared, and then follow up with their primary care doctor or a physical therapist instead of a car accident chiropractor. It makes sense. These are the providers you know and trust.
But here is what most crash victims do not realize: the care you receive in the first 60 days after an accident often determines the outcome of your entire case — both your physical recovery and your legal claim.
A Case We See Too Often
A patient recently came to our office after spending 60 days in physical therapy following her crash. She had improved about 50 percent, which felt like progress. But something was still wrong, and she knew it.
In those 60 days, no one had ordered imaging. No X-rays. No MRI. No CT scan. No referral to a specialist. Her injuries were never formally documented. She was essentially exercising her way through undocumented trauma.
When we performed our initial evaluation — including a full consultation, examination, in-house X-rays, and a computerized spinal ligament assessment — we found a ligament tear corresponding directly with her symptoms and neurological findings.
Why This Matters for Your Case
According to the AMA Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment, a spinal ligament tear carries the same whole-person impairment rating as a fracture or herniated disc. That is significant. Without proper documentation, that injury would never have appeared in her medical record — and the insurance company would have had every reason to minimize her settlement.
At Woolston Wellness Center, we use ICD-10 S-codes (trauma codes) rather than M-codes (general musculoskeletal codes). We connect the mechanism of injury to the specific spinal level and extent of damage. We document concomitant muscle and nerve injury patterns. We refer to the appropriate medical specialists when warranted.
This is not the standard of care you receive at an ER, a general practitioner, or most physical therapy offices after a crash. Those providers are excellent at what they do — but personal injury documentation is a specialty, and it requires specific training and tools.

If this patient had come to our office first — or to any qualified PI chiropractor — she would have known the full extent of her injuries immediately. She would have had documentation that protected her case from day one. Instead, she spent two months with well-meaning providers who were not equipped to handle a personal injury case.
If you or someone you love has been in a crash, the provider you choose in the first few days makes all the difference. Do not leave your health or your case to chance.
